Health, United States (http://www.cdc.gov/)

For over thirty years, the publication Health, United States has been tracking trends in health statistics.  From the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics, the publication contains more than 150 detailed tables and charts on health status and its determinants, health care resources, health care utilization, and health insurance and expenditures. 

Topics covered include birth and death rates, infant mortality, life expectancy, morbidity and health status, risk factors, use of ambulatory and inpatient care, health personnel and facilities, national and state health expenditures, health insurance and managed care, and other health topics.

Past reports from 1975 forward are also available on the website (http://www.cdc.gov/) and in print at the State Library, SuDoc: HE 20.7042/6

The Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives is a selective federal depository library with a specialization in census and labor statistics. KDLA selects:

All Federal Government Documents are available for check out for a period of 4 weeks with a possible 2 week renewal. Patrons may check out up to 50 Federal publications and these materials are available to be sent via messenger mail.

Resource Highlight (2nd Quarter 2008): Statistical Showdown

The United States is the largest source of statistical data with more than 70 agencies authorized to collect and disseminate statistics.  The Office of Management and Budget coordinates federal statistical activity (http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/inforeg/statpolicy.html).

Statistical Showdown offers a look at thirteen of the largest statistical agencies.    These agencies offer reliable, consistent, and comparable data about national demographic, social, and economic trends.       

Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) (http://www.bea.gov/index.htm) offers economic statistics, which provide a comprehensive, up-to-date picture of the U.S. economy, and are key ingredients in critical decisions affecting monetary policy, tax and budget projections, and business investment plans.

Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) (http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs) statistical information on crime, criminal offenders, victims of crime, and the operation of justice systems at all levels of government.

Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) (http://www.bls.gov) principal fact-finding agency for the Federal Government in the broad field of labor economics and statistics.

Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) (http://www.bts.gov) offers statistical information from all areas of transportation from government transportation financial statistics to air traffic statistics to freight transportation.

Census Bureau (http://www.census.gov) main provider of demographic and socioeconomic data, including historical data.

Economic Research Service, Department of Agriculture (ERS) (http://www.ers.usda.gov) main source of economic information and research from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. ERS' program encompasses research, analyses of food and commodity markets, policy studies, and development of economic and statistical indicators.

Energy Information Administration (EIA) (http://www.eia.doe.gov) source of official energy statisticsfrom the U.S. Governmentstatistical agency of the U.S. Department of Energy. Also provides policy-independent data, forecasts, and analyses.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (http://www.epa.gov) monitors the quality of the air; drinking, surface, and ground water; ecosystem status; and the use and release of toxic or hazardous substances.

Internal Revenue Service, Statistics of Income (http://www.irs.gov/taxstats/index.html) offers wide range of tables, articles, and data that describe and measure elements of the U.S. tax system.

National Agriculture Statistics Service (NASS) (http://www.nass.usda.gov) offers statistical reports on a wide range of topics, including crops, livestock, and industry trends. Also contains historical agricultural data.

National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) (http://nces.ed.gov) primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data that are related to education in the United States and in other countries.

National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) (http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/Default.htm) principal health statistics agency, which provides statistics, surveys, and research on health topics, and includes vital statistics for the nation and individual states.

National Science Foundation, Science Resources Statistics (http://www.nsf.gov/statistics) access to publications, data, and analyses about the nation's science and engineering resources.
