Indexes Available for Genealogists/Researchers

KDLA provides valuable vital statistics records for family historians and genealogists. These records include indexes to marriage, birth and death records on CDs. Filmed ledger volumes of birth, marriage and death records are available on microfilm. Also available on microfilm are copies of actual official Death Certificates.

Indexes to Kentucky Births, Marriages, and Deaths - CD
(1911-1999)

A three CD set of databases covering births (1911-1999), deaths (1911-1999), and marriages (1973-1999)

  • Births searchable by child's last name, mother's maiden name, and child's last name and county of birth
  • Deaths searchable by deceased's last name, deceased's last name and county of death, and deceased last name and state of death (for 1960-99 records, where death location is other than Kentucky)
  • Marriages searchable by groom's last name, bride's maiden name, and county of marriage

Disks contain a Microsoft 97 runtime program. If you have Microsoft Access 2000 (part of Microsoft Office 2000, Professional Edition) or a later version installed on your PC, order the Access 2000 version databases.

*These disks are not compatible with a Macintosh computer system.

 

Kentucky Birth, Marriage and Death Records - Microfilm
(1852-1910)

Filmed ledger volumes of birth, marriage and death records, grouped together by county, with three to six counties per roll. (To view these, you will need a microfilm reader compatible with 35 mm film.)

Records are concentrated in the years 1852-59, 1874-79 and 1900-1910, with scattered records surviving for 1860-1873 and 1880-1899. There are years where no records exist for specific counties. Not all information categories are completed for each subject of an entry.

  • Birth records include date and place of birth, name, gender, condition (alive/dead), name of father or owner of child, maiden name of mother, color of child (while, mulatto, or black) and residence of parents.
  • Marriage records include date of marriage, groom's name, residence, age, place of birth, and condition (marital status); bride's name, gender, age, place of birth, and condition.
  • Death records include name, gender, age, place of birth, occupation and marital status of the deceased; name of parents or owners of slaves, date, place, and cause of death, and remarks.

 

Vital Statistics Original Death Certificates - Microfilm
(1911-1957)

Official Death Certificates on file with Kentucky's Office of Vital Statistics.

  • Each year consists of nine to twelve rolls of film.
  • Earlier years included certificate number; name, gender, age, occupation, color or race, place, and date of birth of the deceased; place and date of death; name and place of birth of the deceased's parents; informant's name and address; cause of death; name of physician signing certificate; name of undertaker; place and date or burial.
  • Later years may also include the name and age of the deceased's spouse.

 

Birth and Death Records: Covington, Lexington, Louisville, and Newport - Microfilm
(before 1911)

View year/county availibility

 

Birth records include name, gender and date of birth; whether the newborn is a twin, midget or other category; if a twin, which number in the birth order; whether the child is legitimate; the name, address, color or race, birthplace, and occupation of the parents of the child; the number of children born of this mother; the number of children of this mother still living; the name of the attending physician or midwife, and the date the certificate was filed. The place of birth is assumed to be in the city and county where recorded.

Death records include full name, gender, color, age, marital status, occupation, and date and place of birth of the deceased; if foreign born, how long in the United States; how long in the city where the death occurred; name and birthplace of parents of the deceased; the name and address of the informant who provided this information; the date and cause of death, and the name of the attending physician.

Includes hard to find information gathered before the creation of the state's Office of Vital Statistics

There may be gaps or missing years for both events for any of these cities.
