Technology Analysis and Support Services

The Technology Analysis and Support (TAS) Branch provides advice and technical support to state and local government agencies on archival and records management considerations in the application of information technology to their programs and operations.

The Branch assists government agencies, advisory bodies, and work groups on information policy, imaging, and technical standards, and tries to ensure that such bodies are aware of archival and records management requirements as they relate to information resources planning, management, and appropriations.

As part of this work, it participates in the Electronic Records Working Group (ERWG), an informal, joint interagency body with representatives from KDLA, the Governor’s Office for Technology, the Office of the Attorney General, the League of Cities, the University of Louisville, the Jefferson County Public School District and the Auditor of Public Accounts. The ERWG helps develop policy recommendations or alternatives for issues involving the intersection of technology and records management. The following guidelines and standards have been approved by the ERWG:

TAS works with the other branches in the Public Records Division in the records retention schedules process, particularly as it related to electronic records. For example, the General Schedule for Electronic and Related Records (updated March 2006) was developed by the Branch. The Branch provides assistance on matters related to the training of officials on electronic records management issues and on electronic records management policy and procedures

TAS supports the use of automated techniques in archival and records management applications in KDLA’s Public Records Division (PRD). TAS plays an important role in the development and use of the division’s systems and web pages, and it provides technical assistance to the division’s Micrographics and Imaging Services Branch in the operation of the department’s Clark Center for Digital Imaging.

TAS furnishes professional document conservation consulting, education, and training programs, records disaster recovery assistance, and laboratory conservation treatment through its Document Preservation Laboratory. "A Preservation Checklist for Government Officials" is also a product of this Branch.

The Branch is also coordinating the development of an Electronic Records Archives.
