NoveList Notes

Improvements in NoveList

LOOK FOR CUSTOMER DRIVEN ENHANCEMENTS IN NOVELIST!

Have you looked at NoveList lately? Book covers have already been added to over half of the 100,000 titles in NoveList. Provided by Baker & Taylor, these book covers now appear on the title record of the book. These engaging images will help your readers determine whether a book is just right for them.

But wait! There's more! In March, NoveList 4.3 will be released with a few minor but very exciting enhancements. Many of these new or enhanced features are in response to customer comments and suggestions. Here's a preview:

Quick Search - It's the best thing since sliced bread

Starting in March, you will see a new feature on the left hand margin of every page in NoveList called Quick Search. Quick Search will allow you to enter an author, title, series name or key words in an edit field in the margin. There is a drop down arrow to select the type of Quick Search: Author, Title, Series, or Key Word (Describe a Plot). The default for Quick Search is author (see type of search just below the edit field for the Quick Search). After you enter an author, title, series name or key word and select the type of search in the drop down, you click Go to perform the search. This allows you to perform a search from anywhere in NoveList instead of having to return to the New Search page. This is especially useful when working with a patron or student or when doing a demonstration.

Personal Folder

As many of you know, Personal List is a feature that already exists in NoveList. It allows you to select titles that are of interest to you and create a customized list that you can then save, e-mail, or print. However, before release 4.3 you could only add a book to a personal list from the title record.

In NoveList 4.3, you will see an updated and expanded version of Personal List, which will be called Personal Folder. Personal Folder will now allow you to add a book from either the title record or the search results list. In addition, there will be a link on every page of NoveList that will let you know how many books have been added to the folder and will allow you to view the folder at any time. After the new version is available, we will feature Personal Folder as a NoveList Note and illustrate some of the ways that this new feature can help you provide more robust services to your readers, teachers and students.

New Look to Our Title Record

All the same great information is there but it has been slightly rearranged The title, author and annotation are at the top of the record with the book cover (if available). A link ("Other Titles") will take readers to a list of other books by an author. This feature is currently available via the "All Books by Author" button in the left-hand column of NoveList. Placing the "Other Titles" link directly under the author name in a record, however, ensures that all users are aware that they can get a list of an author's works just by clicking the mouse.

Also at the top of some title records, you will see links such as "Awards," "Book Discussion Guide," "Selected Fiction List," or "Feature Article." When NoveList has a guide or an article that mentions a title or when a title has won an award or appears in a selected fiction list, the top of the book record will display links to the portion of the page where links to these features appear. These new links are being added because several of you have pointed out that many users are not aware that NoveList contains books discussion guides and articles about many popular titles. They will remind you when these features are available for a given book and make it easier to find the links that take you to those features.

Select Services

This link will appear in the left hand margin of NoveList in March. Requested by many customers, this link will take you back to your EBSCO services page.

Enhanced Help Pages

The Help pages in NoveList have been enhanced to provide more information about each page that you are on. Our new help pages include answers to many frequently asked questions. We want to thank those of you who have used our Feedback function to send us questions and suggestions. Your use of our Feedback function is helping us improve our product to make it more responsive your needs.

Updated Learning Center
The NoveList Learning Center has also been updated and freshened. The instructional modules have been streamlined and the homepage has been updated. Many of you use the Learning Center as part of your staff development activities to provide staff with a refresher on NoveList functionality, and as a means of introducing NoveList to patrons. You will find that the Learning Center in version 4.3 does an even better job of supporting these uses.

And this is the perfect time to let you get back to meeting the needs of your fiction readers! Keep your eyes peeled for NoveList version 4.3! Future NoveList Notes will provide you with even more information about these features and how they can expand your capacity to provide your fiction readers with the best service possible.

The information above was taken from the March, 2003 issue of NoveList Notes. The publishers encourage sharing this information with colleagues who would benefit from this content. Because all public libraries in Kentucky have access to NoveList through the Kentucky Virtual Library, it is worthwhile to learn as much about this valuable resource as possible.
