Can Help with Harry Potter Mania
Harry Potter
has become everybody's favorite teenage wizard. Adults who previously
would not admit to enjoying fairy tales or fantasy have been devouring
the Hogwarts saga as fast as J. K. Rowling can turn out new volumes.
In fact, fans are inhaling the new episodes even FASTER than Rowling
is producing them. What do you do when you have read each volume
several times, studied the companion volumes (Fantastic Beasts
and Where to Find Them; Quiddich Through the Ages), and seen all
the movies? Since Volume Five, Harry Potter and the Order of the
Phoenix, is due out June 21st, the appetite will be briefly satisfied,
but there are still two volumes to go!
What are poor Muggles
to do?
Finding
Harry Potter Read-Alikes in Novelist
Find Similar Books offers a way to match your favorite aspects
of Harry Potter with other titles.
1. Retrieve Harry Potter
and the Goblet of Fire and click the Find Similar Books button.
2. Click "Clear" to remove all subject headings, then
select Child wizards in the "required" column and Schools
in the "desired" column.
3. Select levels YA and Children's.
4. Click Search.
5. NoveList retrieves 22 titles, of which 4 are the Harry Potter
books. Click on each title to see more information about the books.
Tip: You can select
other favorite aspects of Harry Potter, instead of Child wizards
and Schools. You can limit the search to any reading level or
levels you want.
Using
a Boolean Search in Reviews
Reviewers often pick up on Harry Potter similarities even when
the subject headings are not obvious connections. You can locate
novels with such reviews by using a Boolean search in the reviews
while excluding J. K. Rowling as the author.
1. Click the New Search
button and choose Boolean search.
2. In the first box, enter Harry Potter and choose Review from
the drop-down menu on the right.
3. In the second box, choose "not" and enter Rowling,
then choose Author from the drop-down menu.
4. Select Children's and Young Adult levels. 5. Click Search.
NoveList retrieves
more than 20 titles, some of which you might not have anticipated,
such as Isabel Allende's new YA novel, City of the Beasts. Look
at each record and check the reviews to see if the title might
fulfill your desires.
Tip: One advantage
to this kind of search is that the reviews will also tell you
which titles might be disappointing to Harry's adoring public,
despite apparently similar subject matter.
