Services for Patrons with Special Needs
Public
libraries strive to serve all patrons. Being aware of resources
available for those with special needs is a critical part
of successful service to the entire community. This issue’s
feature article is focused on a variety of ideas for offering
better service to patrons with special needs. Two guest writers
have provided contributions which describe services they provide
for special needs individuals. They invite and encourage you
to use these resources.
Barabara
Pennegor, from the Kentucky Talking Book Library, fills you
in on services provided by the KTBL and how you and your patrons
can take advantage of those services. Then, Anita Dowd, the
Information Coordinator from the Deaf Resource Library, describes
the availability of services and resources designed to assist
deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Wrapping things up is
regular contributor Nancy Houseal, from KDLA’s State
Library Services, who provides a very useful summary of resources
on this topic that are available for you to check out from
the KDLA library. Hopefully, you can share this information
with your patrons and use it to create new or better services
for an important group of library patrons.
