Course Description

This self-paced, web-based course introduces Basic concepts and procedures of cataloging.

Topics include:

  • Purpose and functions of the catalog record
  • Basics of bibliographic description and use of AACR2 Construction of Library of Congress Subject Headings
  • Introduction to the MARC format
  • Purpose and function of authority control in an online catalog
  • Bibliographic utilities and other sources of catalog records
  • Workflow in the cataloging department

Intended Audience:

Cataloging staff or anyone looking for an introduction to or refresher on cataloging basics.

Technical Requirements:

Participants should have the following installed on their computers:

  • A Flash-enabled browser (for example, Internet Explorer 5.0 or later, Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or later, NetscapeNavigator 4.06, or Netscape 6.0 or later);
    OR
    Flash Player (version 6.0 or later). This may be downloaded for free from www.adobe.com.
  • Speakers and sound card.
  • Internet connection.

Registration to this free of charge class is limited to two people from each library system. This is a self-paced web-based class with an instructor monitoring your progress. This class will be available 24/7 for eight weeks. If you were paying for this session it would cost $220 per person. Registration will be accepted on a first come first served basis.
